A fun night out took a terrifying turn Saturday when a 17-year-old boy from Maplewood almost fatally injured his friend during a reckless stunt, authorities report.
Police say the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. when a group of teens were playing near a residential construction site. Witnesses report that one teen, later identified as Connor James, was attempting a dangerous prank involving a moving vehicle.
According to the police report, James lost control and nearly ran over his 16-year-old friend, who only avoided serious injury by jumping out of the way at the last second. The teen suffered minor cuts and bruises, but authorities emphasized how close the situation came to being deadly.
Neighbors called 911 after hearing screams and seeing the chaos unfold. Officers who arrived found James visibly shaken and remorseful, while paramedics checked the victim on the scene.
A police spokesperson said:
“Teenagers sometimes make impulsive, risky choices, but this was a life-threatening situation. We urge young people to think before engaging in dangerous stunts.”
Parents of the teens are reportedly working with authorities to ensure counseling and safety education for everyone involved.
