Officers responding to a welfare check in a small suburban neighborhood got far more than they expected this week, after discovering young children living in a severely neglected home.
According to reports, concerned neighbors had called authorities after hearing crying and noticing the family’s front yard piled high with trash. When police arrived, they found a scene that left them “deeply worried for the children’s wellbeing.”
Inside, officers described floors covered in old food, clothing, and toys. The kitchen sink was overflowing, and the smell alone told them something wasn’t right. In the middle of it all were two small children — barefoot, hungry, and trying their best to stay cheerful.
Their mother, visibly overwhelmed, reportedly told police she “hadn’t been able to keep up” and “didn’t know where to start.”
The children were taken into temporary care while social services step in to help clean up the home and provide support for the family.
