A tense confrontation in Georgetown turned violent Tuesday afternoon when police attempted to arrest a wanted woman, who allegedly attacked an officer before being taken into custody.
The Arrest Attempt
According to Georgetown Police Department officials, officers were attempting to serve an outstanding warrant on 29-year-old Melissa Greene at her apartment complex on Oak Street.
When officers approached Greene, she reportedly became aggressive, resisting their attempts to detain her. At one point, police say she struck an officer in the arm and tried to push past them, escalating the situation.
Backup and Apprehension
Additional officers quickly responded to the scene. Using non-lethal force and tactical maneuvers, they were able to restrain Greene and place her in handcuffs.
The officer who was struck was evaluated on-site for minor injuries and later cleared by paramedics. Police confirmed that no other injuries occurred during the arrest.
Charges Filed
Greene now faces multiple charges, including:
- Assaulting a police officer (felony)
- Resisting arrest
- Outstanding warrant related charges
Authorities say she remains in the Georgetown County Jail pending a court hearing.
Police Statement
A Georgetown PD spokesperson said:
“While officers aim to arrest individuals peacefully, violent resistance is taken very seriously. We are grateful our officer was not seriously injured and that the situation was contained without further harm.”
Community Reaction
Neighbors described the incident as shocking, with many saying Greene was usually quiet and kept to herself.
Social media users expressed concern over the safety of law enforcement while serving warrants:
- “These officers risk their lives every day — hope she faces justice.”
- “Can’t believe someone would attack police like that over a warrant.”
