A California woman has been fined a staggering $88,000 after being caught illegally collecting hundreds of clams from Pismo Beach. The incident, which quickly went viral, shows the woman digging through the sand and filling baskets with what she believed were harmless seashells — but were actually live clams protected by local wildlife regulations.

According to state officials, each illegally harvested clam carries a fine of up to $1,000, depending on the number and size collected. Authorities say the woman had taken far beyond the legal limit, leading to one of the largest fines ever issued for such an offense in the area.

Wildlife officers reminded the public that Pismo clams are strictly regulated to protect the species and local marine ecosystems. The viral video has since sparked a wave of online reactions, with some expressing disbelief at the size of the fine, while others argued it highlights the importance of respecting environmental laws.

Officials have confirmed the clams were safely returned to the beach, and they continue to warn visitors that ignorance of the law does not excuse illegal collection.
